Point of curiostiy, if I may. At what point, and for that matter, by what measure does a directed energy weapon go from simply 'Laser' to 'Laser Cannon'? With projectile weapons, the threshold is generally accepted to be a bore diameter of 13mm. But a directed energy weapon doesn't really have a "bore", so that's not going to work.
Obviously, the measurement would have to be in energy output, with some consideration of wavelength. Ten thousand watts in infrared and a thousand watts in microwave? Would it be better measured in Megajoules? I really don't know. So guidance is appreciated...
