I pay attention to what goes on at SN! but I comment less.
It's tough going over at SN these days that's for sure. It's not atypical for there to be 600+ comments on a thread which makes skimming past the dreck to get to the good stuff, to learn who has a binder clip stuck in her desk drawer or who needs help with her screen resolution, a more time consuming task than I'd like it to be.

actually, the current thread devolved from name calling and troll smacking into a discussion of belief and epistemology, and cats fighting lazily. I've even tried derailing it with Platform Wars, but no go.

Goodness me. Some people on that thread are keen to attribute radical atheism and 'a sense of moral superiority'. Also, "Atheism is itself a religion".
The idea that "questions about a god are not worth taking seriously enough to warrant an answer or a belief" does not seem to be getting through.

I'm sure Mikey was exaggerating a little and the thread in question isn't the best example but there's less than 6 or 8 people capable of generating 500 or so comments all on their own there. I would say that's not the good kind of crowded but Granny McDragitas is right, people in open forums don't have to cater to anyone's desires but their own. So I take my lurking skills elsewhere most of the time.
Yeah, I'm less interested in the chatroom angle, which is how I used to make fun of Firedoglake and Atrios comments. The JanusNode nodule about dead pets was one such effort.

Well, they were the first time. WTF, blogger?
It was a classic tale. It was this amazing community full of smart, clever people, and we were all genuinely suffering for what bush/cheney was doing to our country, our world and whatever remained of our tattered innocence.
Then it got trendy, the world showed up and kind of homogenized the whole thing.
But it was SO special in it's time, back when a busy thread was 40 posts, back before the great sammich war. And the whole 'Gary Ruppert' thing was without a doubt the funniest running gag I can remember.
Yeah, you're right. They didn't have to keep it the way it was. And there was nothing that could be done to prevent it from becoming just another self-referential blog. But I took it personally, probably because it was the first time I got sucked into an online community, and I liked it...
It had a big effect on me, that's for sure. Turned out I could have drunken conversations with no drunkenness and nobody near me, a plus.
