A Book I Am Reading

It is Gould's Book of Fish.

I was quite prepared to type that even without my Google Book theft tool.

It is a frighteningly apt description of my marriage.

I shan't be revisiting it of choice...

If by "marriage" you mean you only did it once, at least you learn quickly.

Frenchie trouble-makers and pants-men should be avoided, indeed.

Tell me about the tool; the comments make it sound like it's not standalone, is that true?

The thieving requires Firefox and Greasemonkey. It then exhibits a little "Download" button at Google Books that'll let you download whatever PNGs are scanned - but only individually, and not with unique filenames. That's fine for minor thievery.

Larger works are more troublesome as you'll want to line up a download manager for the PNGs like DownThemAll that'll do multiple downloads and name files sequentially.

Two problems follow: one is that the server may not give you the pages in order (results won't vary wildly but they will vary enough that if you want to turn 'em into a PDF you have too look at 'em), and the second is that you wind up with a mess of image files. Making them into one usable file will require another tool like Acrobat or the like.
