Gee Whiz

Time to say "Good for Hillary."

Smart boss too, though lacking in specifics somewhat.

Heading from reasonable to stupid fucking asswipe, here is idiot Thon Friedman:
[...]

All that said, I hope Mr. Obama will take this instinct a step further when he travels to Oslo on Dec. 10 for the peace prize ceremony. Here is the speech I hope he will give:

[...]

I will accept this award on behalf of the American men and women who are still on patrol today in Iraq, helping to protect Baghdad’s fledgling government as it tries to organize the rarest of things in that country and that region — another free and fair election.

[...]

But have no doubt, those are the exception. If you want to see the true essence of America, visit any U.S. military outpost in Iraq or Afghanistan. You will meet young men and women of every race and religion who work together as one, far from their families, motivated chiefly by their mission to keep the peace and expand the borders of freedom.
SUCK ON THIS, NOBEL POOS PRIZE!!!

Why stop there? Why not write the speeches that he hopes will be given by the Nobel Prize winners for physics and chemistry and economics?

I would say more, but I am saving my eloquence for the speech I'm writing that I hope will be given by the next Oscar best-picture winner.
Kate Beckinsale will be mentioned.

Because after all, what could possibly better represent a peaceful world where men live together as brothers than soldiers under arms in a combat zone.

Y'know, I'm beginning to think some of these people are just retarded...

Jebus but Freidman makes it difficult to lampoon him! What a dickhead.

If Friedman is capable of looking at the garrisons of an empire -- occupying countries on the other side of the world that it was expedient to invade at one point*, and consisting of dudes who signed up for money in the absence of any other form of income when the army seemed like a low-risk option -- and seeing "the essence of America", then I am not going to argue with him, because whatever he's got, it could be contagious.

Which is what mikey said, but at more length, on account of three beers.

* See also "throwing small countries against the wall to show the world who's boss".

I'm trying to decide whether this is more like a recruitment advertisement, or a page from a Choose Your Own Adventure story.

Now at 5 beers so getting even lengthier.

Or Germany, or Japan, or Saudi Arabia, or Korea, or Vietnam or 745 other bases across our over-stretched, decaying empire.

When the Nobel Prize Committee mentions nuclear weapons, Friedman hears "Blessed are the Peacekeepers."

Ha. One in which lots of people die.

Keeping those bases are what helps subsidize the American economy. Being the global cop means you can justify an absurd defense budget spent - necessarily - on American goods. No other nation has that economic prop. I wonder where the US would be without it?

I suspect they have a grave misunderstanding of the word "Peace".

Spending money on infrastructure and Health Care?

Things that actually have a greater impact on the economy, incidentally.

A decided disadvantage in that those items do not blow up or kill brown people.

Which seems to be the only aim of America anymore.

"Peace" = "Desert".
OK, so it sounds better in Latin.

Sure, like the welfare rate. But I wonder if that spending was just gone and social policy remained the same whether America would look the same.

In a lot less debt.

Also, I have my doubts that's really the speech Friedman hopes Obama would give: NEEDS MOAR TAKSI DRIVERS.

Well obviously you would have the jackboot of islamocommiefacism on your face so things might be a little different.
It's disturbing the amount of difference that there might be if Gore had won. I don't believe in pivotal moments of history as such, all things have a backstory, but the 2000 election might be kind of close to one.
Damned railys, buy a car!

This morning I learned from Lynn Cheney that the interests of the US and the interests of the rest of the world are diametrically opposed, and that the prize is merely the committee's way of recognising that Obama is acting to weaken the US.

I was surprised that they didn't honour Bush and her father, years ago.

Liz Cheney. I am sure that Lynn Cheney would never support such cheap shots unless of course they emanated from the omnipotent supralegal position of the vice-president's office.
