Furthermore!
How do you marginalize a significant protest against a politician or policy you sup port? Lowball the numbers, then dismiss participants as deranged and possibly dangerous kooks. In the case of Saturday's massive 9/12 protest in Washington, done and done.
If you're Matt Welch, chiefly editor of Reason?, you pick up your wild overestimates of the crowd and fling them at the Lieberal Media. Preferably while howling and gibbering.

I don't get it.
At all.
What, I'm supposed to be surprised that there are a WHOLE BUNCH of scared angry stupid racist crackers in america? What, is that the "news" here?
However many there were, of COURSE there was a buttload. Walk thru the mall in a black suit (sorry) or just walk down the street and talk to people.
If anybody thinks it's shocking that tens of thousands of white christianist wackjobs showed up in DC because our black muslim president scares them, they truly have not been paying attention... - September 14, 2009 at 10:56 AM

Dan Barna is a spokesman for the National Park Service.
Dan Bana is Private Investigator.
Or the other way.

And there was also the putting it all in historical context by an old pro at protesting. Roger L. Simon:
One other note from an old protestor. When I made that statement to Glenn those many months back, I did it with the supposed authority of someone who had been at a lot of demonstrations when on the left. I can remember a couple that might have been nearly this big (not sure, really). But I can’t remember anything this size that was entirely non-violent. That’s rather miraculous for a two-million person demonstration and deserves the highest praise, though I doubt the mainstream media will say much. They’re still digesting how much they’re despised. - September 14, 2009 at 11:59 AM

You seem to be blaming a stupid error for the discovery of the original Inauguration quote, the change to the source's name, and the removal of any details that would reveal the misattributation. Rather than mendacious malice. - September 14, 2009 at 12:54 PM

Dan Bana makes it to Indiana Gun Owners. At the bottom of this thread you can see the default position of believing the guy who misquoted ABC News, meaning that ABC trying to correct the record is now a "retraction" in order to conform with the liberal media line on things.

Am I right in thinking that Thomas Lifson at AmThink is the original mendax in this story? The post has been amended to make the lie less transparent (no more link to the original boston.com Inauguration story). This makes no difference to the chain of secondary citations, with 1640 Gogglehits for "Thomas lifson dan bana", most of them showing a holy-writ quality.

Malice on someone's part was my first thought, too, Dr B, but he says the Globe article he links in the correction was what was sent to him and he misread it as referring to 9/12, implying he was the one who got the name wrong. Of course, he also misspelled "demonstrations" in his correction, so...

Your numbers and your links have been debunked, Michael Laprarie.
You can admit you were taken in by Thomas Lifson and "Dan Bana", or you can continue playing the fool.

From the AP last January:The National Park Service says it will rely on a media report that says 1.8 million people attended President Barack Obama’s inauguration.
Park service spokesman David Barna said the agency did not conduct its own count. Instead, it will use a Washington Post account that said 1.8 million people gathered on the U.S. Capitol grounds, National Mall and parade route, he said.
“It is a record,” Barna said. “We believe it is the largest event held in Washington, D.C., ever.”
