At this link is a fine radio documentary about R&B artist Jackie Shane. Shane was a gay man from Nashville who managed to be as out as you could get in Toronto in the 50s and 60s. Being black was a bit better in Canada than in the US, but being gay was still a lot of trouble.
There's a long monologue in his cover of Money that's worth hearing.

Wow, good stuff (the songs on You Tube; I'll get to the documentary later).
There's been quite a bit written about the role of gay musicians in the African-American church music tradition.
Little Richard came outta that.
I dunno what it is, exactly, but the pack o'smokes in the bottom corner makes me wanna fire one up.
And I haven't had a cigarette in something like eight years.
And I'm utterly convinced they stink.
