Another Kooky Libertarian Thread at Crooked Timber

Given that the title is "Fuck me or you’re fired!" it could have been far worse, but comments are still open.

I'm still not tempted.

I'm more of a Glenn Greenwald/NekkidCapitalism guy than than a Crooked/LGMer (as you know).

In other business, someone was glad that this didn't move.

And I pondered...hmm, maybe that could be fixed?

I was reading that a day or so ago and didn't see too much that made me raise my eyebrows in the comments, but maybe things have gotten more exciting since I was there.

Given the rolling back of employment protections, unions, and the increasing desperation, I imagine that state is one of the rightwing/libertarian goals.

Just like the good old days.

Increasing desperation of those employed, was what I should have typed. Just to be clear.

As much as I admire the dedication of those of you who have the same endless debates and arguments with the same idiots over and over again for years on end, without any actual outcome other than a perverse satisfaction that is utterly beyond my ken (not to mention my barbie), I lost interest in doing that in oh nine. Or thereabouts.

My rule for any substantive discussion on the intert00bz any more is that all participants must be able to agree on the basic set of established facts - then we can proceed from there. Since that has become increasingly rare, I tend to avoid places where arguing with trolls is encouraged...

I wouldn't comment in that thread if you offered me a face to eat.

The "What's the difference between this and prostitution?" angle is so icky. In the ideal libertarian world one would assume that a prostitute is not a literal slave, but I guess they don't want an ideal libertarian world either.

I'm more of a New Clopping Republic guy myself.

Well, Libertarianism sees tyranny only from government sources, never corporate sources. So, the government telling a CEO that his company can't dump toxic sludge into a river is tyranny, while the CEO telling his typist, "Put out or get out" is FREEDOM!!! Of course, the freedom of the typist is never even under consideration.

Liberty
For me,
Not thee!

Ah, Libertarianism, where paying taxes as a duty of citizenship in a free society is the worst sort of coercion and abuse of power, but saying "fuck me or your fired" is a contract dispute, at most.

I'm going to have to pay more attention to Naked Capitalism. I think my main prejudice regarding Greenwald is that I don't like looking at Salon.

mikey said...

My problem with Greenwald is that although I agree with him 90% of the time and more importantly, he's right about stuff that a lot of people avoid talking about, and I think he does important work but...

He's just unreadable. His style is abrasive, his writing is ugly, and he sounds, frankly, like a crank writing cramped manifestos on endless legal tablets.

I'm glad he's there, I don't want him to quit, but I just can't...

The general opinion -- not of the CT commentariat, but of the sources they found -- was that using the tight labour market to impose sexual slavery upon one's employees was certainly a Bad Thing, but government interventions to reduce that exploitation would be even more heinous.

What's their reasoning for approving of the actions of one type of collective, corporate body but not another, I wonder?

I'm with mikey. Greenwald is usually right, but his style wouldn't convince his own mother. Naked Capitalism is really good. Even Stoller has seen the light over there.

Trampled by Turtles

P.S. Nekkid Capitalism is great, but they don't cover the corporate warfare / national security scam like G.G.

And that's a significant scam.

You mean the new red, white & black National Socialist design?

ifthethunderdontgetya™³²®© said...

Apparently nothing is so bad that it can't be made worse. The Salon redesign stinks.

Yes. Didn't much like the way that comments work either.

Is this your invention, S.McG?

You know it is, Mr. Forgetful.

I still have the fixins for that around somewhere. Had to download a whole bunch of pics of girls with long tongues for that one. Research is hard.

Still, I have no idea why all those girls put such emphasis on tongues. What's going on there?
