It was Thoroughly Middle Class Christmas Entertainment Night at the Orpheum last night. It was moderately enjoyable; Stewart McLean told a bunch of stories involving Christmas and ferrets and people going through car washes. The big musical guest was Hawksley Workman who I dislike. He makes me think of comedy open-mike night and that quiet guy you met once trying a "weird nervous comedian" shtick and failing, but in song. On the other hand I don't think I've heard too many passionate songs featuring soup so score one for him I guess; I'll remember someone going all Bono over parsnips for quite a while.
Being in the Orpheum always feels a little strange. Vancouver is a new town full of new glassy and spindly toy-like buildings; is there really something old here?
Hmm, when was the last time I was in that building? Wait, that long ago?
Wait, turn your sound off or maybe leave Laser Cannon Deth Sentence playing:
Yessir, some of the tallest buildings in the British Empire there.

Needs more orbs.

I think I wrecked the sensor on this one so it might be blind to all but the most orbvious manifestations. Gotta ask VS about fixing this one picture I like...
Oooh! Please ask away.
I guess; I'll remember someone going all Bono over parsnips for quite a while. That made me laugh. In his defense, soup is pretty great.
Gooooorgeous theater! Wowee! It's kind of weird to think of a metal concert going on in it. So, how was Dethklok? Do they sound as good live as they do in the studio?
Now, is the Stewart McLean guy supposed to be your version of our Garrison Keillor? (Full disclosure: I have never actually listened to Garrison; I just know about him.)
Yes, Stewart McLean is a Keillor rip-off artist.
Dethklök were a lot of fun, but they were kinda playing along to created-for-the-live-show animations, so there wasn't a lot of in-song fooling around. The solos still made me laugh, and Gene Hoglan was on drums and for that stuff the drummer is crucial.
There are drum solos at Dethklok concerts? That is pretty funny. Aren't drum solos considered something of a joke in music circles?
I'll be honest with you: I forget Dethklok is a somewhat tongue in cheek group sometimes. I don't enjoy their music in an ironic way like I do Tenacious D. Ok, my appreciation isn't entirely ironic.
There are drum solos at Dethklok concerts?
I don't remember one; I meant the guitar solos, as in Dethjingle. What I meant to convey is that it measured up to the kind of frantic playing the songs required, and Hoglan is great.
Believe me, I'm right there with "D-D-D-D-D-D-D-D-D-D-D-D-DIE!"
Well, now I'm a little disappointed there was no drum solo.
I think I wrecked the sensor on this one...
Maybe you just need more alcohol, S_McG.
