Important News

Hunting down Goatse.

Krazy Kats

On the heels of the Derbyshire firing, we find Rich Lowry moving on to other more personal matters:
In other news, my cat died. I adopted Monroe and Jackson on a whim as youngish cats from a pet-adoption outfit that operated from a park near my NYC apartment. I quickly realized it wasn’t fair to keep cats in a studio apartment when I was never around, and sent them to the paradise of my parents’ place in suburban Virginia.
Get the Derb affair behind you Rich. There are important things to consider. The death of an innocent kitty is so—
Monroe was all-black, with long, elegant feline lines.
Oh man.

Large charcoal sketch of innocent black kitty at the link, and this comment:
Mr Lowry

With all due respect to your feline friend, you already jumped the shark once this week.

Giant charcoal sketches of your kitty are just a bit over the top.

Movie Day

It probably shouldn't be a surprise that a movie with Canadian actors based on a Canadian comic and shot in Toronto is very very Canadian but I was surprised.

It was entertaining in the way that drinking with my friends in the bar is entertaining. That sensibility was weirdly well represented. I now feel like a stereotype.

Perhaps this way of being is honed in Canadian-style environments, such as inside tents on top of picnic tables:

Better for your mental health to be from a weightlessly charming country like Canada than, say, Belgium:

Amulets

...In that pool of racists, there are nonetheless many intelligent and well-socialized racists. (I’ll use IWSR as an ad hoc abbreviation.) You should consciously seek opportunities to make friends with IWSRs. In addition to the ordinary pleasures of friendship, you will gain an amulet against potentially career-destroying accusations of prejudice if you fire one now and again.

SEXIER-THAN-WARRANTED UPDATE:

It's still somewhat surprising that Archie is so far out in front of the conservative movement. Inside: will Betty or Veronica go black?

Neato!

The first big OS X malware attack arrives via Java.

That's a pretty big deal. I'll check the aging machines when I get home, but Firefox and NoScript and Flashblock and Adblock Plus is a pretty good combo. News I've seen is unclear, but the bad bug seems to like Safari: don't use that, silly person.

SMUG UPDATE:

Clean, thank you.

Goodbye Philadelphia

I won't actually miss the item at the bottom here:

Still, the guy behind the bar was nice enough and had me drink this, which was very bitter and very drinkable all at once. Named after a kitty and everything.

I did not go inside this place although it sounded SO INVITING:

One thing about the security state is jobs jobs jobs!

When the Mounties zapped that guy to death at the Vancouver Airport they were phoned for; the billion security guys around here could zap anyone to death - or quicker still shoot whoever was handy - without costly fuel charges. EFFICIENT.

Trivia

Food today was Vietnamese at Nam Phuong, gummi worms (I am going surprisingly slow on that bag) Pepsi Max, three beers during the workday (New Year's resolution to drink more paying off!) and a cupcake. Hipsters at the cupcake place sent me to the Center for Architecture and Design bookstore and Omoi for Lovely Daughter-placating trinkets and these are those:

Flight tomorrow after a grueling morning, so I think I will go bar-hopping to increase the pain. Oscar's and Good Dog were recommended by the resident hipster at Omoi, and I also saw a Belgian place. Why not sample all three, says I.

Gee whiz hipsters are swell.

UPDATE:

Belgian beer place seating space overrun by nitwits speaking some variety of idiotic French. Where the fuck did THEY come from?

Great Moments in Popcorn Preparation

If you want to read an embarrasingly thin-skinned response to Henry Farrell by David Graeber go here. Holy shit.

Doesn't sell the book very well, but minus the psychoanalysis and name-calling the post is pretty terrific. It gets much more useful after the hate is out of the way.

Farrell promises a response.

Philadelphia for the Very Short

That last item is distressing for a proud Canadian. Say what you will about the decaying state of their research and development, American bootscraper technology remains decades ahead of the efforts of my homeland.

Consumption

Items consumed today:

Also gummi worms and Pepsi Max and beer. Need more beer, situation to be remedied soon.

Hoagie from Cosmi's, dripping with olive oil. We know who to blame. Look at that meat packed in there. It was excellent, fresh and zippy and spicy.

The Yoo Hoo is from Planet Fun, totally a real planet.

I Want Your Organ

Anyone who has bought some kinda fancy electrical keyboard knows More Buttons Are Good.

I might not get to see it played because STUFF TO FUCKING DO but above the fancy-looking pipes are threatening-looking baffles that must produce a thunderous noise.

Thank you nice Macy's employees, but your company doesn't seem to think much of the nice building they have.

Where in the Fuck is McGravitas?

Where in the fuck is McGravitas?

Three FUCK YOUs, one crazy person playing the saxophone, many drunken ladies, a puddle of vomit, a guy pissing in the street. Yes, it is Philadelphia.

Perhaps I should sleep now.

The Art of Trolling

Overheard in the TSA-related line-up:

Teen Male: ...Wheel of Fortune.
Female: Oh my god. Did you hear that? He said WuHEEL of Fortune. That is so stupid.
TM: What? "Wheel of Fortune."
F: He did it again and he's doing it just to be stupid. That's not how you say it.
TM: How do you say it?
F: WEEEEL of Fortune. WEEEEL!
TM: "Wheel of Fortune."
F: He did it again! Learn English. Oh my god this is so dumb.
TM: What?
F: The H is SILENT. You don't pronounce it. You don't go WUHEEL.
TM: Who says?
F: Have you taken an English class?
Older Male: She's right, the H is silent.
TM: Why is it silent?
Older Male: Because English is a combination of many different languages.
F: What do you learn? Don't you take any grammar?
TM: I take English classes but they don't teach grammar.
OM: She's right. You don't pronounce the H. You don't say it.
F: This is so stupid. You should learn to speak. WEEEEEL of Fortune.
OM: You should probably look it up on the computer. Nobody pronounces the H. That's not good English.
TM: That's not what a computer is for. You use a computer for entertainment.
OM: No, you use a computer for-
F: A computer is a TOOL. You can learn things with it. Look up grammar.
TM: No. I'm not going to look up grammar.
OM: You can learn English better. You know, if you learn English better, you can write papers in good English.
TM: ...
F: You're pronouncing it wrong. Nobody pronounces it like that. God.
OM: You know, I was in a meeting the other day, with the board of directors of three hospitals. And I- you know what they told me? One of them told me that...I spoke English better than...I spoke so well, better than anyone they'd heard.
F: Why did they say that?
OM: I was using some words you don't normally use. "Plethora." I used "plethora".
F: That's a good word.
OM: And "encumbrance". They didn't hear that one a lot.
F: That's a good word too.
TM: ...
TM: Hey, the other day I was watching this YouTube video and...you know Star Trek? The guy on Star Trek who plays the robot Data. Brent Spiner. Do you think he's gay?
F: Oh my god. Why would you say he's gay?
TM: Well he was being interviewed and he said "totally fabulous". And he sounded like he might be gay.
F: You are being so stupid. You're not gay just because you say "totally fabulous".
TM: But do you know if he's gay? It really seemed like he might be.
OM: I don't know if he's gay. What's a gay person supposed to behave like?
TM: Like Brent Spiner.

FUCK YOU.

Boy it sure was terrific that Canada weathered the global financial crisis so well. I mean, look at this wonderful payoff!
Changes to the age of eligibility for Old Age Security will start in April 2023, rising gradually to age 67 from 65 by Feb. 1, 2029, affecting those born after April 1, 1958.
There was no need, of course, but Tories will be Tories.
