I saw a burned out building hung with stuffed toys in all the windows (4 storeys) in San Jan, Puerto Rico, 1999... To memorialize the children who died there. Think it was an orphanage.
It has its charms--- sure beats spiraling into despair. I've long thought that the best way for this country to revive and reorder itself is to have a vibrant arts and crafts movement with a lot of little cottage industries and cooperative housing and businesses. (Does "businesses" really have four esses? Hmmm.)
Land grants would help too. Is it hopelessly argle-bargle socialist to want land reform?
Detroit is a very interesting catastrophe. There's been a base of weird and creative people living there for a long time, and its current troubles must make land cheap Cheap CHEAP!

It kinda has an Urban Smurf vibe.

C'mon artists! Move to Detroit!
Interesting urban farming going on too with questionable land finagling on both sides of the issue. Growing grain in a downtown!
God has forsaken you.
