Well This Is Embarrassing

Deanna Murray:
I really hated Trailer Trash Barbie.

Remember her? The knocked up Barbie doll from the late 1990s wearing a teeny tiny skirt and tube top?

The thing is I probably didn’t hate it for the same reason the mainstream conservative would hate it. No, I didn’t get on a high horse and tout the moral downfall of an iconic toy with her outside-of-wedlock pregnancy … I cared more about the fact that:

A. I grew up in a trailer – and it was a VERY nice one!
B. I happened to be a teen mother – and wouldn’t have traded it for the world.
C. And I’d never wear a mini that short – trailer girls aren’t automatically hussies.

See, it was a stereotype, one stating those who grew up in trailers were trash, likely to get pregnant, and would never really amount to much.
Well gosh darn it, that trash business is not very nice.

Somehow I am reminded of Michael Moriarty meeting the accusation of craziness with a confession of shock therapy.

Fighting stereotypes, Deanna helpfully informs us that girls who wear short skirts are hussies.

Apparently, I was once a hussy. ODDLY ENOUGH, never a teen mother.

Stereotypes just suck, right?

Who is this person, other than a BigContributor>

This cracked me up:

Tattooed, proud, and a woman of the non-traditional hair-color variety purchased at a Target near you, I find it necessary on a daily basis to help people understand stereotyping conservatives is exactly why we are in the predicament we are today when it comes to our ‘uncool’ quotient.

Conservatives should demand a skin-head Barbie, complete with a Swastika tramp-stamp, and w-h-i-t-e tattooed on one set of knuckles, s-k-a-n-k on the other set, prison-style.

That was awesome.

You know, I also object to the way zombies are depicted in George Romeero's movies.

Not that I don't eat brains, of course, but they are delicately sauteed, not raw. And when I shamble, I do it to the beat.

I'm pretty against those new speedy, agile zombies. Who do they think they are, anyway?

Am I wrong in my understanding that there never actually was a product called Trailer Trash Barbie?

I know there was a pregnant one, back in the 70's I think.

We are articulate too.

ZRM, there was an artist who made one around 1997 as part of a show, and there were a couple trailer trash not-Barbie dolls produced as jokey adult gag gifts by others around 2006 or so. It was never a widely available item, nor advertised as far as I know, and I bet she never saw more than a link or forwarded email pic.

Actually, he probably made it earlier, 97 was when he was sued by Mattel. Paul Hansen.

T., she never says Trailer Trash Barbie was made by Mattel.
I wasn't aware there was a Conservative (she should be capitalizing that throughout) way to dress or act - though conservative is another story. What seems to happen historically is that edgy, radical styles (whose political over-tones are almost always leftist or anarchist) are quickly appropriated by the richer fashion houses that cater to wealthy, often Conservative ladies who like to "dress up" and play act... sucking the life-blood out of the new chic in the process. Biker, transvestite, bohemian, punker, flower child, trailer trash, starlet: they steal from them all, smug in the knowledge that they're not missing out on any of the kulture out there and are hip to all scenes. It's completely superficial and only about self-expression to the extent that said fashionista has walked in the shoes of (and shares some philosphies with) the biker, transvestite, etc.

What a twit that bitch is.

Yeah, it would be embarrassing if she wasn't writing for BlartFart.

If you are writing for Blartfart that pretty much proves you are beyond embarrassment. QED

She seems to think it was a real doll instead of a work of art, though... "downfall of an iconic toy" for Christ's sake?!! And the '97 one wasn't pregnant, she had a black baby. The 2006 gag gift "Turleen" was pregnant, but it's still like getting bent out of shape about something in the Archie McPhee catalog.

Thanks T, I've bookmarked Archie McPhee. Sad to say they're out of the fake vomit and poop, which I preferred to Barbies in my day. For xmas for my nieces, think I'll splurge on some French Fry Lip Balm and "How to Get Along With Boys" Book (from the 1930's!), which I'll secretly scour for my own edification first.

Barbie is iconic though, as much as Lincoln Logs or (my dad's fave:) Meccano (sp?). You'd be hard-pressed to find a little girl in the first or second world who didn't have at least one. I liked the shoes best, so cute!

tigris said...

Yes, it's iconic, which I'm sure is why the artist chose it as the means to make a statement; his statement, however, no more led to the "downfall of an iconic toy" than any other individual's statement. I think she's either being really dumb or really dishonest the way she phrases the first bit. If not both.

Clearly THIS was the downfall of Barbie.

I rate for Barbie of the Undead.

Also official Birds Barbie.

If Substance is proposing to remake 'Downfall' acted out by Barbies, I will watch it.

our ‘uncool’ quotient.

It's always the same in algebra class. Dividends get all the attention and the quotients have to sit at the losers' table.
