Still More About Religion

Big Hollywood is mad at The Newsroom. There are one two three four FIVE stories on the front page right now. Let's look at number five by Licensed Hyperbolist™ Tony Lee. Watch this first:

Now Tony Lee:
[Jeff] Daniels and Aaron Sorkin, the show’s creator, were on “Piers Morgan Tonight” on Friday discussing the show when Morgan played the much-publicized clip in which [the Daniels character Will] McAvoy is asked by a college student why America is the best country in the world and goes on a tirade against America that is reflective of the scornful and shameful way in which Hollywood liberals, mainstream media elites, and academics in ivory towers feel about the greatest country known to man, which Abraham Lincoln referred to as “man’s last, best hope.”
Visions of an imaginary Even Bester Country in the World may differ.

Or course we are missing Disneyland and Slayer and New York and decent barbeque and we have too much tundra.

The refutation of the blasphemous speech written by Sorkin:
Will’s words and premise are demonstrably false and only believed by those who do not think America is exceptional and is no different or better than Brazil, Turkey, Canada, China, Spain, Kenya, or Azerbaijan.
I have this idea that here on this new-fangled internetty thing demonstrable falsehoods can be demonstrated with demonstratey goodness. Not even trying that looks silly, but I could be demonstrably wrong.
And despite the prevalence in the dominant popular culture of people like Sorkin and Daniels, who pal around with liberals like President Barack Obama, America still remains a shining city upon a hill. And if, God forbid, America ever ceases to be exceptional, it will be because of those in Hollywood, academia, and the mainstream media who, like Daniels, cheer McAvoy’s words and believe in their bones that McAvoy's sentiment about America is true.
People who do things mean nothing: it's all about belief.

Sheesh, it's only a T.V. show- they need to get a grip!

FFS. If you're going to hate Aaron Sorkin, hate him for his horrible, insipid, over-the-top, dialogue. Hate him for the fact that mere seconds into a Sorkin scene you might have the urge to drive a fork into your eye socket. Don't hate him for being liberal. Honest to gosh, wingnuts, it's the least offensive thing about him.

Also, why is being truthful about Murka exactly the same as hating Murka? Can't you see it for it is and still kinda dig it? I mean, that's what I do.

The speech itself is comical. It's like Hermione zapped him with a statistical knowledge spell.

Ha!

It's a shame because all that stuff is true. But somehow Sorkin makes it obnoxious.

Not that I wouldnt cheer if I ever heard someone make that speech. I would. But then it would be spontaneous, and it wouldn't be Sorkin and it wouldn't be obnoxious.

You may think I'm crazy, but I've never watched this stuff.

I'm kinda hoping the Breitbart sites all dry up and blow away. Also.

Maybe that's why I enjoyed The Social Network. I took it for granted that everybody in it would be contemptible.

Me neither, & I am "crazy."

Also amusing is that actual (& no doubt liberal) critics have taken the VS position (& even harsher) in their critiques of Sorkin & the show.

Being objectively better than every other country ever, anywhere, does not make the United Snakes Exceptional #1. That requires not just being better than those other crummy places, but being absolutely perfect, & denying any claims to the contrary.

Extra revelunt.

That is terrific. I am grateful to have avoided almost all of that stuff.

Did someone forget to clap?

I was thinking of a little Peter Pan there but it was begging for it so hard that I felt spiteful.

Huh. I'm not familiar with a lot of his stuff, but by GAWD I LOVE 'SportsNight' enough that I actually bought the box set of DVDs with money. That may be the best thing I've ever seen on the TeeVee...

The irony is that Hollywood movies are among our most successful exports.

Imma gonna leave this here even though it is off topic because I know how much sub likes to have his searches directed.

Ooooh, Sportsnight. That's the show that turned me anti-Sorkin. The dialogue was just so fucking pretentious, so overwrought. A wretched show.

Ha. That is why I do nearly nothing involving money on the internet. I manage some banking and that's it. Although I still have some paypal cash from eBay hanging around.

Substance McGravitas said...

Might be time to use something like this though. And this one seems wise.

M. Bouffant said...

Yeah, I liked SportsNight too.

For unpretentious & underwrought dialogue there'a always Dragnet.

I love how Johnny Spaz Nolte is all like "2.1 million viewers ain't shit!" When HBO renewed shows that get less than half that earlier this year. Liar.

Oh, you should dig up Gary Graham's freakout over Veep from a few months back. Worth it for the priceless "I do not hate" line.

Or why don't I give you the link:

And now Louis-Dreyfus stars in “Veep," a show about the first female Vice-President … who is a scatter-brained dimwit with no political savvy or self-awareness … so … don’t tell me I don’t know what Palin is all about. I watch HBO!

I suppose you figure the darned liberals get their news from HBO if you get your news from Fox.
