Filler

Jonah:
I watched most of the Emmys last night. I thought it was probably the best-produced and -hosted one in years, but I can’t say I’ve watched them all. While I’m delighted by the best actor and supporting actor nods to Breaking Bad, I still think it was robbed of best drama series. Mad Men is good, but over-honored.
I just can't do it like he does it, or maybe I can. I haven't paid a lot of attention to arguments I make, but I'm pretty sure I leave myself some outs most times. In any case, I figure meetings aren't long enough even when valuable things are getting done, so I'm going to try to be a little bit more like Jonah, as much as I can manage, when I get a little more practice in. Gotta go, but I may peek in now and then if something important happens or if I feel the need.

Orbs Unmentioned

True horror!
On Aug. 27, 1891 a passenger train derailed off the trestle near Statesville, NC and sent 30 people to their deaths. Legend has it that every year on the crash's anniversary, the sounds of screaming passengers could be heard on the bridge.
Laugh, unbelievers, laugh:
Twenty-nine-year-old Christopher Kaiser and a dozen other amateur ghost hunters were on the [trestle] early Friday morning hoping to have ghostly sightings of a train that derailed at the site 119 years ago. Instead a real train with three engines and one car turned the corner towards them.

Everyone except Kaiser were able to run away unscathed, reports the Columbia Daily Tribune in Missouri. Before being hit and falling 30 metres off the trestle and into the ravine below, Kaiser pushed a woman away from the train.
Good for Christopher Kaiser, noble in sacrifice to humanity and tradition.

Damning with No Praise

Glenn Beck quoted at The Corner:
In a surprise appearance at the FreedomWorks conference in Washington on Friday, Beck had explained why he decided to spearhead what was, in many respects, an ecumenical revival. “My role, as I see it, is to wake America up to the backsliding of principles and values and most of all of God,” he told the assembled conservative activists. “We are a country of God. As I look at the problems in our country, quite honestly, I think the hot breath of destruction is breathing on our necks and to fix it politically is a figure that I don’t see anywhere.”
On the bill at Beck's Saturday rally to speak oratorically was a figure that I seen somewhere before:

Someone who MAY NEED MENTOS.

My God, It's Full of Orbs!

Oprah is Divine!

Men are fags:
When did men in America go from being masculine steak-eating, plaid shirt wearing, Old Spice smelling, cigar smoking cowboys who like football, hunting, and Clint Eastwood movies to skinny jean wearing, satchel carrying, pierced ear metrosexuals who like chick flicks, “The View,” and Bath & Bodyworks? The American man is an endangered species due in large part to the over-feminization of society.
Clearly America's manliness index must be bolstered by an influx of no-nonsense chick-punching immigrants.

Read the whole thing. It is funny, you worthless weaklings and/or castrating viragos. Comments are entertaining too.

Feminism

K-Lo:
We Catholics clearly and obviously embrace the natural gifts of women as something we need for salvation. We need Mary. We need her as our mother. Behold, your mother!
I'm all for embracing the natural gifts of women, as I imagine K-Lo must be, AND NOW YOU'VE IMAGINED IT! HA HA!
But angry, chiding e-mails condemned me for my refusal to apologize for what I said about [Mel] Gibson and his work at the time. For my “inaccuracies,” because I called the director of this movie a feminist for the work he did in bringing the mother of Our Lord to life for a culture that needs her and the mercy her son offers.
It does make a kind of sense that a movie pretty much about one guy getting the shit kicked out of him has a feminist point in there somewhere. I resolve to one day watch it. Also to fix the dishwasher.

Endorsement Department

Christianity is under assault from Randroids, so Richard M. Reinsch responds to Jason Steorts:
No discussion of the theological-political project is complete without the Spanish Inquisition, I suppose. Yes, the Catholic Church erred in getting involved in state judicial proceedings whereby dissidents to the regime were marked for punishment and some for execution. However, as the late Fr. Richard Neuhaus noted, “Over the three centuries of its full operation fewer people were killed than were killed on a slow afternoon at Auschwitz or in the Gulag Archipelago, not to mention the millions starved or slaughtered by the Great Helmsman in China.”
Kevin D. Williamson jumps into the fray:
“Not as bad as Auschwitz, the Gulag, or Mao” is not something I much want to see engraved in granite over the church doors. It certainly is not Neuhaus at his most persuasive. If the choice is between Ayn Rand and “Not as Bad as Auschwitz,” then the saints haven’t a chance and we might as well all pack it up and just go have ourselves an Objectivist garden party or something.
Must I cheer for the Randroids? Can they mention assfucking?

Spoken Like a True Believer

Jason Steorts:
Yesterday I read for the first time Cathy Young’s thoroughly excellent 2005 Rand essay for Reason, which makes the point well. Young observes that Dagny Taggart, Atlas Shrugged’s heroine, “calmly and quite unnecessarily shoots a guard who can’t decide whether to let her in or not. The man, you see, ‘wanted to exist without the responsibility of consciousness’ — obviously a capital crime.” I cannot agree, however, that Rand’s system qua system is a totalizing ideology. Rand the person and Rand the artist betrayed the ideas of Rand the thinker, which, if properly adhered to, could not have justified tyranny or exploitation of any sort.
Proper adhesion demonstrated below:

A JanusNode Appearance

Implausible:
Washington (CNN) – Embattled Democratic Senate candidate Alvin Greene was escorted from a meeting of the Oconee County Democratic Party on Saturday after police received reports that he and a companion were causing a disturbance.

Greene had been invited to attend the group's routine breakfast meeting, but was disinvited after he was indicted by a grand jury on obscenity charges. But he showed up anyway, and according Seneca Police Chief John Covington, one of his staffers became angry and engaged in an argument with meeting attendees.

According to the police report filed after the incident, Greene's companion, Dottie Sue Maggart-Feldman, argued with several members of the breakfast party, but that the altercation did not turn violent.
Who could believe that Dottie Sue would go nuts?

Mixed Media

The usual from Michael Moriarty:
George Soros now rules over half of the Earth: Eurasia, North America and, with his foot in Brazil, a large hunk of South America.

With a Sorosian Barack Obama running the United States, a Sorosian Vladimir Putin running the neo Soviet Union of Third Millennium Russia, and that earliest of Sorosian visionaries, Dr. Henry Kissinger of Harvard, running an eternally Sorosian dialogue with the Tweedledees and Tweedledums of Red China, we have an entirely Sorosian New World Order.

The Greek Gods were thought to hurl down their thunder and lightening in the same way Dr. Evil casts his spell over the Earth.

America: Not Enough Like Saudi Arabia

Andy McCarthy:
A friend poses the following: Imagine that there really were these fundamentalist Christian terror cells all over the United States, as the Department of Homeland Security imagines. Let’s say a group of five of these terrorists hijacked a plane, flew it to Mecca, and plowed it into the Kaaba.

Now let’s say a group of well-meaning, well-funded Christians — Christians whose full-time job was missionary work — decided that the best way to promote healing would be to pressure the Saudi government to drop its prohibition against permitting non-Muslims into Mecca so that these well-meaning, well-funded Christian missionaries could build a $100 million dollar church and community center a stone’s throw from where the Kaaba used to be — you know, as a bridge-building gesture of interfaith understanding.

What do you suppose President Obama, Mayor Bloomberg, the New York Times, and other Ground Zero mosque proponents would say about the insensitive, provocative nature of the proposal?
Dear Andy: it would be a great thing if Saudi Arabia were somehow made free enough to tolerate people who were stupid in a different way. You know, more American.

The Bible Keeps You Stupid

Jennifer Keeton is a crazy bonehead who enrolled in a graduate program in counselling:

The school noticed that she'd probably be a shitty counsellor if she continued to be such an asshole and set out a program for her to follow if she wanted to graduate:

Ha ha, the idiot was told to wear the dunce cap. But instead, as assholes do, she sued.

In a rare piece of cheery news, the jerk lost:
A federal court judge has decided Augusta State University student Jennifer Keeton can be expelled from ASU's counseling program if she does not complete a remediation plan that involves diversity and sensitivity training about homosexuality.
Enjoy your legal bills, dimwit, and doesn't the Bible tell bitches our sisters in Christ to shut the hell up? I think I read it in the book of Galoshes.
