mikey said...: Interesting that, of all the options, it mentions Cormac McCarthy, particularly the scene from Blood Meridian. Hadn't really thought about it, but the knife fight in the mexican prison in All the Pretty Horses was probably the best description of edged weapons combat I've ever seen, and truly reinforces the adage 'nobody wins a knife fight'.

Thankfully(?), modern weapons, due to the cauterizing effect of the heat generated by the propellant/friction/explosives tend to reduce this effect in many cases, other than the most traumatic destruction.

As a personal observation, I was much more horrified by guts than I was by blood. After a while, it begins to seem like EVERYTHING bleeds pretty much all the time, but I could never get past the shock and horror of piles of slithery, stinking viscera.
