Every now and then I watch the actual broadcast-news shows, just to see what they’re up to. Last night I caught NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams In their story on Augusta admitting women Stina Sternberg of Golf Digest said:Also, let it be known thatThis is a momentous day for the game of golf and sports in general. It’s like the Berlin Wall of discrimination finally coming down in golf.We could be here all day finding new insights into the absurdity crammed into this soundbite. I have no doubt it is a momentous day for the game of golf. And, I’ll leave it to others to argue how big a deal this is for sports. But the Berlin Wall of discrimination? What the hell?
First of all, the Berlin Wall kept people in, not out (a simple fact countless people still seem not to understand when it comes to, say, the Israeli defense barrier). It kept poor people and rich people alike in (though East Germany’s supply of rich people had a rapid half-life). Was Augusta keeping female golfers locked up in the club pantry?
The Berlin Wall was also a symbol of systematic evil and geopolitical nuclear brinkmanship. Augusta was a symbol of . . . well it was a symbol of various sorts to various people. But in no way was it a symbol of anything like the Berlin Wall save to the very dim or the very ignorant.
THE WHITE MAN IS THE JEW OF LIBERAL FASCISM.
Maybe Stina Sternberg graduated from Swarthmore.

That's it?
THAT'S what he's got?
The Berlin wall kept people IN?
And, I guess something about how the Augusta Golf Club doesn't have nuclear weapons?
Kay, see, if it was anybody else I'd go off here on the pure tendentiousness of purposely and obtusely missing the point. But it's Jonah, who has proven repeatedly over the years that he really IS that fucking stupid.
So, yeah. OK, Jonah - let's just say you win the argument and move on...
And Bonzo went to Bitburg.

Rapid half-life? Really? Even if you charitably change 'rapid' to 'brief' or 'short', the mental image he evokes is one where the wealthy people in East Germany had a finite probability of emitting charged particles and exploding.
It is kind of reassuring that Jonah's slovenly way with English syntax is matched by his slovenly way with the tools of figurative expression. The even-handed distribution of his sloppiness is commendable.
Part of me wants to recite the Orwell essay, and part is saying "Forget it, Jake, it's Goldberg".
Bitburg is a perfectly good Eurolager, ITTDGY.
Shorter Smut: Jonah Goldberg needs to read a book about cliches.
See, it's really quite yucko. Jonah gets all pissy about someone comparing the Augusta decision with the Berlin wall (completely different, he notes, to the Israeli self defence barrier)when someone with his name would not have been asked to join that sort of club until quite recently. We have Marx's famous quotation as evidence of that.
So, rather than just being happy about something Joberg gets peeved about it because some of the Daddy Men have been slightly dissed.
This is really what we're doing now? Picking sides on a one-percenter club's inclusion policies? I'm glad that Augusta is catching up to the 20th century. I just hope at least 10 percent of those women bring the matches and gasoline with them.

No, just picking on Jonah because it's easy and fun.
Mr McGravitas (so-called) hits the nail on the head.
Because Joberg's there.

I spent some time near there long ago. Bitburger Pils was fucking great.
