Let's be fair: it is entirely possible that Reagan himself was simply okay with playing with the worst racist themes of the last 50-odd years cynically, exploiting some of the worst history this country has produced, without actually believing any of the racist tropes he invoked, over and over and over again, without himself believing in it.
