Dumping iTunes for Nightingale

It turns out that my system using Mac OS X 10.9 doesn't much like old versions of iTunes - the ones with iTunes DJ - and as a result the means of updating Apple's stuff, the awful App Store, doesn't even work on third party software I want updated. Oh well, I'll replace some files and that'll be that.

It turns out that Nightingale plays my library in the way that iTunes used to before Apple's management downgraded it, although what's required is an add-on for it called Party Ruffle. Nightingale scoops up my iTunes library pretty handily and it works fine.

Goodbye iTunes.

Hard to understand why you're clinging to the old paradigm of locally stored music files.

Switch to Google Music, you can upload 20,000 tracks (per login) for nutin' and also have access to, like, pretty much everything. So you really only need to upload the stuff that isn't already in GMusic's library.

I honestly don't understand why someone would do anything else.

What am I missing?

The fate of Google Reader?

Transitioned smoothly to Feedly.

So why would I choose, out of free-floating angst, to keep music on loca storage when I can push it uphill once and use it everywhere.

I still have it all backed up on a server, but keeping 8TB of music stored locally in this day and age just seems...stubborn...

Err.

8GB.

Zombie is the one with Terrabytes...

I think we've explored "everywhere" before. It doesn't really work here anyway, and transfer rates from one machine to another are easier and cheaper via sneakernet than over the airwaves.

Canada is one of the suckier countries for data transfer charges on phones and the like.

Everyone in the world hates itunes dj, why don't you just get over it and make your own program? you are always bragging that you can. You fans here would probably love it and I would too.

You know, I actually did think about just playing with Applescript and making something happen via that. But that takes work and I can download Nightingale.

Work is a four-letter word, or so I have heard.

The cloud is fine when you're connected and if you don't care about sound quality. I like to listen to good-sounding music at work and home but also in the car and even when I'm out camping without any connectivity. The cloud can't handle that. There are use cases that "the cloud" just doesn't cover.

Also, you never know when the shitty music industry will decide that you pirated all that music and sue you and shut your account down. If you don't have a local copy, you're SOL.
