Still sounds clangy and I figure the object is still the array; "number" seems correct to me but it's a word with a lot of flexibility. I suspect it's just that English is screwy.
Compare with "There are a herd of zombies coming to eat my brain." The herd's a singular item and "are" should be "is".
I am a grammar failure incidentally, so I note that Google frequency errs on my side.
how to get Michelle Obama's toned arms
ReplyDeletewith a chainsaw?
I believe Acme has some kind of arm-removal device which I will send away for promptly. Also, I will not read the fine print.
ReplyDeleteyou mean a chainsaw ISN'T an arm removal device?
ReplyDeleteTell it to Bruce Campbell.
Video loopy Burt seems WAY too interested in this topic. AND WHERE ARE HIS HANDS? Busy off-camera or chain-sawed off? OR BOTH?!!!

ReplyDeleteLawnmowers, man, lawnmowers. Not that the chainsaw isn't noble, but there are a vast array of tools available for the job.
He's getting more interested one topic up.
ReplyDeleteOnly once he gets home from church.
ReplyDeletejust think, RB, there would be crew on that scene who's job description was 'arm-chucker'
ReplyDelete"Is a vast array". I blame the arms that I haven't removed yet.
ReplyDeleteI think it was right the first time....
ReplyDeleteNaw, I'd go with the array being a singular item no matter what comprised it.
ReplyDeleteNow I'm more of a spelling zombee than a grammar zombee but it seems to me that the plural mode agrees between are and tools, not the array part.
ReplyDeletei.e. You could also have put it 'there are a vast number of tools available for the job'.
