Have Some Sugar

A thing from the song library I hadn't listened to until a week ago:

There is so much gloss on that it's almost not a song. I worry that by posting this the boys who smoked and had "Judas Priest" written on their jean-jackets in ball-point pen are finally going to catch up with me and beat me senseless.

Hey, remember this? No?

  3. Hey, the saccharine pop stuff pays better than the jagged, jangly experimental stuff. this and this got some serious airplay on the left-of-the-dial station I listened to in high school.

Hell, even Gang of Four had their dance-pop phase.

  4. If Hanson had been around in the 80's, I think they'd have sounded like the first song.

It's weird because I looked at the lyrics to that first song before hearing it, and I never would have expected it to be such a trifle.

But, anyway...Take me a tour of a bubblegum factory!

  5. I dunno, Hanson always had a harder edge.

Everything Scritti Politti did is worth a listen, although the Arif Mardin production style behind their most popular stuff sounds horribly dated now. Green Gartside wrote most everything and he is very conscious of what he is doing. Perfect Way really is a great song.

  7. The Sweetest Girl is earlier than the US hits but sounds less dated, has more knowing lyrics, and is still a cotton-candy fest.

  10. Yeah, that's nice. The "walk in the park" part is the most compelling IMO.

  11. Sugar Hiccup. The Cocteau Twins got a lot of credit for inspiring a lot of fluffy white-girl singers, but not enough credit for how crazy the guitar sound was. Sure, it was covering up a lack of ability, but it was also really relentless in this period.

  12. Cocteau Twins were magnificent, particularly when they were still gothish. Treasure is a treasure. Heaven or Las Vegas is wonderful, too, in a different way.

  13. A friend of mine taught this to his punk-rock band and they thought he was a genius. And he was, just a stealing kind of genius.

  14. Huh. Never would have guessed Bouffant for a Cocteau Twins fan.

  15. I like the B-side of "Sweetest Girl", "Lions After Slumber". The lyrics could have been written by Janus Node.

  16. But you know he spent a lot of time CHOOSING them.

I think I still have that CD somewhere...gonna have to haul it out.
