I responded, “It’s a think tank devoted to restoring the founding principles to our national life.”

“Oh,” she said. “Ultra right wing.”

“Uhm exactly which of the founding principles do you disagree with?” I responded.

    ORIGINS OF THE THREE FIFTHS COMPROMISE:

    mikey wanted to take two gallons of scotch to the dinner party at his sister's house. Sister and family objected, suggesting that mikey would actually DRINK the two gallons of scotch, break stuff and pass out on the sofa. They suggested mikey bring one fifth of scotch. mikey was concerned that with only one fifth of scotch, he might be somewhat sober throughout parts of the evening, leaving him scarred for life.

    There were extensive negotiations, the result of which mikey was allowed to bring three fifths of scotch to the dinner party at his sisters...

    Claremont Insitute about page (my emphases):

    The mission of the Claremont Institute is to restore the principles of the American Founding to their rightful, preeminent authority in our national life. These principles are expressed most eloquently in the Declaration of Independence, which proclaims that "all men are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights." To recover the founding principles in our political life means recovering a limited and accountable government that respects private property, promotes stable family life, and maintains a strong national defense.

    Not much about these last two in the Declaration of Indepedence.

    Not overmuch in the Constitution, either, though I do recall the take on "strong national defense" was NO STANDING ARMY.

    Maybe everything flows from the Pursuit of Happiness, which back then included owning other people but didn't include Victorian hang-ups about the family or informal imperialism and then later did include these but now excluded the owning of other people, so don't question the Wisdom and Consistency of the Founding Fathers. Private property surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the Republic together.
